It is good to see that you guys are still around eating smoke. I grew up around the fire company with James Whitehead ( Butch )my Uncle. It was because of the wonderful men there at the firehouse that I myself became a Volunteer at 14 in North Carolina. I visited several times with my uncle to the fire house and was able to see many of the guys i had known for years. Although they gave me the devil about back woods southerners, I was very welcome there and felt like one of the crew. I remember fondly the 51 Mack as it was the first truck i ever rode on and was greatly honored when it was used in the funeral of James. I had always dreamed of moving back to union Beach but my travels with the Military would not let me. I did how ever manage to stay with different Departments all over the world while traveling and Like Butch I managed to get in over 25 years as a firefighter / Paramedic even making rank of Chief. The values instilled in me by Butch and the others at the fire house Also made me seek to do K-9 search and rescue which led me to Ny after the 9/11/2001 attacks on the WTC. I was honored to have been requested by Police Commissioner Bernard Keric and the Mayor of NYC. After spending close to six months with my dog Banjo I left NYC and returned to North Carolina and finished my service as a Firefighter / Paramedic Search rescue specialist. All with the knowledge that Butch and the guys of Union Hose looking after me and guiding my every decision. Some things may change but I will always feel brotherhood with Union Hose Fire Company and it's members and have a soft spot in my heart for the old Mack and the times spent with you guys in the back shooting pool and having a beer. Until we meet again. God Bless and protect you and Union Beach.
